ANOTHER RECOGNITION FOR MALAYSIA AS DATO YAHYA A. JALIL IS APPOINTED AS VICE-PRESIDENT IN UIM

Malaysia’s role as the catalyst to the revival of Formula 1 Powerboat in this region since 2001 has been recognized as Dato’Yahya A. Jalil the Managing Director of H20 Sports, the organiser of the Malaysian Grand Prix was unanimously appointed as the Continental and Regional Vice-President at the 77th Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) General Assembly in Portimao, Portugal today.

UIM is the world governing body for all motorized water sports with its headquarters based in Monaco.

The appointment  which was proposed by the President of UIM, Mr. Ralf Frohling from Germany and unanimously accepted by all 57 representative member countries without any single opposing vote came as a pleasant surprise but yet timely . Mr. Ralf in recognizing the importance of Yahya’s appointment said “Dato’Yahya’s appointment is testament to the UIM’s acknowledgement to his commitment, dedication, ability and contribution to the world of Formula 1 Powerboat and Formula Future over the past four years”.

Yahya’s appointment is yet another recognition for Malaysia as no other Asian has been placed high in the UIM which traditionally has been placed high in the UIM which traditionally has been held by Europeans and Americans. “The appointment is for four year term and as the Vice-President, Yahya would be answerable to the Council of the UIM”  added Ralf Fröhling.

Dato’Yahya was previously elected as an Administrator in the UIM at the 75th General Assembly in Capetown, South Africa in October 2002. Yahya said “As a Malaysian, I am honoured with the appointment as the Continental and Regional Vice President and will strive to uphold the trust that has been bestowed upon me by the UIM and to raise the awareness of the sports in this region”. Yahya’s role among others would be to ensure all  National Authorities are active in promoting and marketing all motorized watersports according to the UIM rules, to assist National Authorities in all their activities and to attend to their problem solving and to deal with questions which would be raised by the Council of the UIM pertaining to the development and activities of motorized water sports in this region.

Under Yahya’s leadership and guidance H20 Sports has revolutionized the organising of Formula 1 Powerboat with introduction of the Malaysian leg into the World Championship series. H20 Sports has been accorded the “Best Organiser’ for the World Championship Series since 2001 for three consecutive years.

With Yahya’s vision, H20 Sports  also initiated Formula Future in Malaysia which is an introductory program to motorized water  sports with the intention of unearthing local Malaysian youth and children to be aspiring Formula 1 Powerboat  Pilots. In less than a year since its inception, Malaysia emerged as the World Champion in the Formula Future World Championship which was held on the 23rd – 25th July also in Portimao, Portugal.
